Organize Workspaces with Folders
Use folders in the Workspace Manager to keep your saved JSON workspaces structured, named, and easy to find.

Once you start saving multiple workspaces, the list gets long fast. DataLensia's Workspace Folders system lets you group, rename, move, and reorganize your workspaces with a familiar folder hierarchy โ just like your file system.
๐ฉ The Scenario
You work with JSON data across several projects โ a customer database, a product catalog, and some internal API responses. You want to:
- Keep each project's workspaces grouped together.
- Quickly find any workspace without scrolling through a flat list.
- Move workspaces between projects as they evolve.
๐ ๏ธ Step-by-Step: Creating Folders
- Open the Workspace Manager (click the folder icon in the header, or press the keyboard shortcut).
- Click New Folder (the folder+ icon).
- Enter a folder name, e.g.
Customer Data. - The folder appears in the sidebar. Repeat for each project/category.
๐ Moving Workspaces into Folders
Drag and Drop:
- Click and hold a workspace card.
- Drag it over the target folder in the sidebar.
- Drop โ it moves instantly.
Context Menu:
- Right-click (or click the
โฏmenu) on any workspace. - Select Move to Folder.
- Pick the destination folder from the list.
๐ Folder Operations
| Action | How |
|---|---|
| Rename folder | Double-click the folder name, or use the โฏ menu โ Rename |
| Create subfolder | Click โฏ on a folder โ New Subfolder |
| Delete folder | Click โฏ โ Delete (workspaces inside are moved to root) |
| Expand/Collapse | Click the folder arrow to toggle its contents |
๐พ Import & Export Workspaces
Your entire workspace library โ including folder structure โ can be backed up and restored:
Export:
- Click the Export button in the Workspace Manager header.
- A versioned JSON file (
datalensia-workspaces-<date>.json) is downloaded. - This file contains all workspaces, folder structure, notes, and transform configs.
Import:
- Click Import and select your backup file.
- DataLensia validates the schema automatically.
- Workspaces are merged in โ existing ones are not overwritten.
๐ก Organization Tips
- Use project-based folders: one folder per client, feature, or data source.
- Add a
_archivefolder for old workspaces you want to keep but not see daily. - Name workspaces descriptively:
Users API - 2025-04is more useful thanworkspace-3. - After exporting, commit the JSON backup to Git for team-wide workspace sharing.
๐ Sharing a Workspace from a Folder
Folder organization is local โ the Share button in the workspace header still generates a compressed URL that works for anyone, regardless of their own folder structure.
๐ Try it now
Open the Workspace Manager from the Editor header and create your first folder to start organizing.
